· Running Eggshell, we received a message 608 “Invalid Prime Data block or data chain at block ### ”
· We are running OverEasy or Eggshell to reoganize files. Why do we get an error about “not enough Sort work space” to complete the reorganization on some of our files?
Running Eggshell to reorganize a file (or list of files),
we received:
Msg: 904 from Eggshell
EMERGENCY – Eggshell was unable
to reorganize the file filename in
library filelibrary on Volume yourvol. It is in U-format as file BAH#### in
library EGGWORK on volume workvol,
and must be reorganized manually.
What does
this mean and what happened to the original file?
Eggshell reorganized your file out to a temporary consecutive work file called BAH#### in library EGGWORK on the volume indicated. However, Eggshell could not recreate your original file back on its volume for various reasons:
· It could be that there is
not enough space to recreate the file on its original volume. Remove unnecessary files on that volume to
create more available space.
· The disk volume may be too fragmented to recreate the file. Run Eggshell’s Extent Consolidator to consolidate extents and allow for more usable disk space.
· The disk volume you are reorganizing to may have a VTOC or bad block problem. Run the VS LISTVTOC utility to check for VTOC errors and/or the VS DISKINIT utility to check for bad blocks on the disk. Refer to the associated VS Reference Manual for more information on these VS utilities.
Once you have identified and taken care of the reason Eggshell could not reorganize the file back to its original location, you can recreate your file by running OVEREASY (not EGGSHELL). Specify the temporary workfile BAH#### in EGGWORK as the INPUT file to OverEasy. Specify your original file’s name and location for the OUTPUT file.
If OverEasy exists, newer versions of WANG Copy will call OverEasy to perform file reorganization. If your version of OverEasy is expired, this message will appear. If OverEasy is expired, you should scratch all related OverEasy files from your system.
If OverEasy is not expired, the reason you are getting this message from WANG Copy requires further investigation. We recommend you attempt the file reorganization using OverEasy or Eggshell to try to determine the problem directly.
We are attempting to run the Extent Consolidator through the EGGSHELL or EGGCIP program and are getting an error that the “Consolidation could not be started because Subtask quota is zero.”
The Extent Consolidator requires a minimum subtask quota of “1”. Your VS Security Administrator will need to run the VS Security Utility and modify your User ID. Change the “MAXIMUM SUBTASK QUOTA” field to at least 1.
Running Eggshell, we received a message 608 “Invalid Prime Data block or data chain at block ### ”
The file is damaged. You can run WANG Verify to confirm OverEasy’s determination. You will need to restore the file from a previous backup.
We are running OverEasy or Eggshell to reoganize files. Why do we get an error about “not enough Sort work space” to complete the reorganization on some of our files?
Some large files with a lot of alternate indices require more temporary sort work space than other files. OverEasy/Eggshell depend on the VS Operating System to pass it the names of the volumes that allow these temporary sort workfiles to be created. You can increase the number of volumes that allow work, by going into Operator Mode, then PF10 Control Disks. PF11, Owner Information will show which disks currently have WORK enabled. To enable WORK on other volumes for Sort work space, select a volume and modify WORK = “NO”, to WORK = “YES”.
The problem is that file @EGGCHK@ in @USICAT@ on the system volume is damaged. This could have been caused by too many reorg sessions or concurrent reorgs that did not complete successfully because of a system crash, or problems with concurrent reorgs not having enough space. Resolve any system problems and look for BAH#### files, (in library EGGWORK), that may have been left on the system. If necessary, run OverEasy on the BAH files to recreate the original file(s). Delete the damaged @EGGCHK@ file. A new @EGGCHK@ file will be created the next time Eggreorg is run.
With version 5.07 we introduced a new and fundamentally different free-extent consolidation engine. The new program much faster than the old one but takes a different approach to the problem. The goal is to make most of the free space available for new files, and it does that well and quickly. It will not waste a lot of time and energy trying to eliminate very small free extents that would not contribute significantly to that goal. Also, it will not move very large files. To really clean up a volume, restore it with CLEAR=YES after a full backup.
